The name Caran d’Ache was inspired by a highly regarded Russian artist of the time named Emmanuel Poire. In Russian, the name for pencil is Karandash. The word Caran d’Ache actually comes from the Turkish phrase “karat ash” which translates to black stone. This black stone is actually graphite, which is the ultimate material for drawing and writing.
