Collecting Fountain Pens

The renewed popularity of fountain pens as writing instruments over the past several years has been accompanied by a rise in the number of collectors. Collectors of antique, vintage and rare pens differ from most other collectors in that many of them choose to use their fountain pens, at least occasionally. A good fountain pen can literally last a lifetime if it is well cared for.

People collect fountain pens for a variety of reasons. Some are looking for an investment, while others have a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship, history and cultural values embodied in the fountain pen. Many active users amass a number of pens and end up seeking out specific models and brands to add to their collections.

Collecting is a highly personal activity. Whether or not you actually use them, your pens are literally an extension of your personality. Make sure you pick models that you like. You might also have a preference for older fountain pens or for modern, limited editions. Contemporary pens tend to be simpler and cheaper to acquire, but vintage and antique pens hold more historical and aesthetic interest for many people.

Before you start, decide on a budget. You can start lower, but most collectible pens will set you back hundreds or thousands of pounds. Educate yourself and get some tips on what to buy by reading magazines, books and websites devoted to fountain pen enthusiasts.

You can pick up modern fountain pens from pen shops, while for older items you should look to other collectors, online dealers and eBay. Pen exhibitions and conventions are also good places to buy fountain pens from all eras.

Whatever you decide to collect, your pens are sure to give you years of pleasure, as well as a fascinating heirloom for your children.

  1. I have started using fountain pens again recently after a gap of a number of years. There are some wonderful pens out there and I would love to start collecting, but a lot of the prices are out of my league!

I have noticed, though, that there are a lot of bargains to be found on eBay. I picked up a nice Mont Blanc for under $100 recently. I can’t buy many at this price, but am now looking at some nice Pelikans.
